During the fall through mid-winter of the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school years, weekly nature journaling sessions enhanced academics in 2nd and 4th grades. In the words of John Muir Laws, leader in the international nature journaling movement, nature journaling helps students to "access and fall in love with nature." In the process, they learn to pay attention and remember, develop curiosity, and think creatively — all in the context of recording their encounters with pieces of local nature. Using the prompts of I notice, I wonder, and It reminds me of, the students documented their observations using words, pictures, and numbers. By encouraging their observational skills, the sessions connected the students to their environment.
